Naxos Churches: Discover the many beautiful churches of the island of Naxos Greece
There are about 500 churches on the island of Naxos Greece. They constitute a part of the island’s cultural and esthetical wealth.
The Churches of Hora
- The Catholic Cathedral is located on the central square of the Venetian castle. It has been built in a baroque architectural way. The church is richly decorated with a naxian marble floor and some beautiful icons.
- The Orthodox Cathedral is situated in the north side of the town. It was built around 1787 and is dedicated to Zoodochos Pigi. The church’s interior is richly decorated with some fine wall-paintings.

Church of Panagia Drossiani
The Church of Panagia Drossiani is one of the oldest churches of the island and it is still officiating today.
It has been built between the 6th and 7th century..
The church is located near a little village called Moni, in the area of Tragea.
It is an Early Christian church known for its rounds shapes and its dome.
The interior of the church is decorated with wall paintings.

Church of Agios Mamas
The Church of Agios Mamas is one of the oldest churches on the island of Naxos.
It is located behind the villages of Potamia and is dated back to the 9th century. It is known for its cross, sculptures and murals.
It is believed that, as one of the oldest Naxos churches, it housed the Orthodox cathedral before the Frankish occupation in 1207.
The church of Agios Mamas is the patron saint of the shepherds.
The
Monastery of St.John Chryssostomos
- The Church of Panagia Mirtidiotissa is a little picturesque church built on a tiny islet in front of the port. It is considered as one of the trademarks of the island.
There are many other churches in Naxos town.
The best manner to discover them is by walking the narrow streets of the town.
TheChurch of Panaghia Protothrone
The church of Panaghia Protothrone is dated around the first half of the 9th century.
It is still officiating today as a consecrated Orthodox Christian church. It is known as one of the earliest churches of transitional type.

The Monastery of St.John Chryssostomos is located 3 km away from Naxos town. It is a beautiful church from the 17th century.
It is situated on the mountain of Grotta coast and reminds of the Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa in Amorgos. The site offers a beautiful view.
