Naxos Island Greece: A great variety of Naxos local products
Naxos Greece is
famous its variety of local products. It is the largest and most fertile
island of the Cyclades.
It has an important agricultural production.
The island is famous for its potatoes, tomatoes, olives, olive oil,
fruits, honey, cheese, wine and its famous liqueur “Kitron”.
Naxos is also famous for its high quality marble used since the antiquity
and the handcrafted textile.
Food
Many specialities of Naxos are based on the delicious variety of cheeses
produced by the island.
The cheeses are the “Graviera”, the most famous of the Naxos cheeses,
the “Mizithra”, the “Manouri”, the “Xynotyro”, the “Anthotyro”, the
“Provio” and the “Kefalotiri”, a hard and salted cheese which is used
for omelettes, pastas and the famous saganaki(fried cheese).
Wine and
liqueur
The Island of Naxos produces the famous liqueur “Kitron” which is
an aperitif made by a fruit called Kitron, an exotic fruit close to
the lemon.
The first distillery was established in 1896 in the village of Halki.
The island of Naxos is the island where the god Dionysus grew up.
Dionysus
is the god of wine and according to mythology, he loved Naxos so much
that he made the island fertile with plenty of vineyards producing
wine of quality.
Today, there are vineyards all over the island and local wine can
be tasted and bought everywhere.
